Finding the voice of an organization that has been showing up quietly for decades.
True North of Columbia has been answering the call since the 1970s. What started as a volunteer organization of University of Missouri graduate students serving rape survivors grew into one of mid-Missouri's most comprehensive domestic and sexual violence programs. Today, True North runs a 24/7 crisis hotline, provides emergency shelter, delivers community education, and walks alongside survivors through counseling, legal advocacy, support groups, and transitional housing. Last year alone, they answered over 4,200 hotline calls and provided more than 6,400 emergency shelter bed nights. Its visual identity needed to better reflect the warmth, dignity, and sense of possibility behind that work. At Hoot Design Company, we developed a new brand system rooted in the idea of Quiet Autonomy: True North as a steady presence beside survivors, offering guidance and support without taking away their agency.
The identity combines a compass and rising sun into a symbol of guidance, safety, and new beginnings, supported by soft gradients, warm photography, expressive serif typography, and an optimistic yet grounded color palette. Across digital, print, environmental graphics, and campaign applications, the system creates space to breathe, balancing the seriousness of True North’s mission with a visual language centered on hope, freedom, and moving forward.
